چکیده

Two experiments examined how spatial learning perspectives support navigation through virtual urban environments. Participants briefly learned the overall layout of a virtual desktop environment, and then were taken on a simulated journey ending at a starting location within the environment. In Experiment 1, during the journey participants watched simulated video feeds either from the front of the vehicle (route perspective), above the vehicle (survey perspective), both feeds simultaneously, or no video at all. Participants then navigated between ten successive landmarks, and we measured indices of spatial and temporal efficiency, and heading error. Results indicated that the route perspective supported a restricted range of local navigation whereas the survey perspective better supported far-space navigation. Experiment 2 demonstrated that the survey perspective also better supports navigation around unexpected detours. Results are discussed with regard to theories of spatial memory and the design of computer-supported spatial visualization technologies. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Navigation of a Mobile Robot Using Virtual Potential Field and Artificial Neural Network

Mobile robot navigation is one of the basic problems in robotics. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for autonomous mobile robot navigation in an unknown environment. The proposed approach is based on learning virtual parallel paths that propel the mobile robot toward the track using a multi-layer, feed-forward neural network. For training, a human operator navigates the mobile robot in ...

Geographical slant facilitates navigation and orientation in virtual environments.

Theoretical considerations and earlier experimental findings indicate that traveling over slanted terrain can lead to an enrichment of the perceived spatial cues relevant for navigation. We investigated the proposed facilitation of a uniformly slanted environment on navigation and orientation performance with a virtual environment presented on a large 180 degrees screen, using as material a vir...

Modeling Human Spatial Navigation Using A Degraded Ideal Navigator

Navigation of novel environments requires an ability to acquire, store, and recall spatial information. A navigator can use this information to generate novel, efficient paths between arbitrarily-chosen locations in the environment. In the first section of this thesis I review relevant recent research into exploration and spatial learning. I examine biologically-inspired computational models of...

Navigation in shared spaces

Designing navigable electronic environments usually involve looking at navigation from various perspectives. This paper describes some of the views that have to be considered when designing for navigation in electronic worlds with special reference made to shared spaces. Current ongoing projects involving issues related to navigation in shared electronic spaces are also briefly described. These...

Theta oscillations and human navigation: a magnetoencephalography study.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to study alpha and theta activity while subjects navigated through a computer-generated virtual reality town. The subjects were first allowed to explore the environment freely. They then had to navigate from a starting point to a destination, knowing that an obstruction would appear at one of several possible locations along the main route and force them to...
